THE IMPORTANCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS GROWN IN VOLCANIC ASH RICH SOIL
Hawaii’s soil is nutrient rich due to the presence of volcanic ash. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphate and many other trace minerals. By growing superfood level antioxidants in this soil full of minerals, it further increases their nutrient bioavailability, thus making them even more powerful when used in skincare. Some of our favorites grown in Hawaii’s volcanic ash rich soil are noni fruit, coffeeberry and strawberry guava.

Soil
A rainbow of colors can be found in Hawaii’s soil due to the abundance and variety of minerals from the volcanic ash.

Volcano
The Kilauea volcano on Hawai’i Island provides the soil with nutrient rich, volcanic ash, perfect for giving antioxidants grown here “super powers.”
FERMENTED INGREDIENTS BOOST OUR ACTIVES
By using fermented ingredients, it helps active ingredients break down so their nutrients and minerals can be more rapidly absorbed in the skin. This process makes the ingredients overall much more rich in antioxidants and amino acids, which have an amazing anti-aging effect on the skin. It also helps the ingredients to further absorb, which is especially beneficial for dry skin!
WHY USE CRYSTALS IN SKINCARE?
Nearly everything in nature has both an electromagnetic field and a vibration. Vibrations resonate at different speeds. As human beings, we pick up vibrations as do crystals. Crystals oscillate and hold their frequencies as they have a natural ability to power and support energy fields. The electromagnetic energy from a crystal can transmit to balance, heal and energize the skin as well as promote healing of the mind and body. We use rose quartz and sapphire crystals in our skincare products because they help to increase circulation/blood flow, which helps plump the skin and overtime generate collagen.
OUR FRAGRANCE

Our natural fragrances come from the highest quality
and purest grade essential oils and natural fruit extracts.
We DO NOT use any synthetic fragrances in any of our products.

OUR COLORS

Our colorants are from natural, plant and mineral based pigments.
Many of our raw ingredients produce beautiful hues of green,
pink and lavender. Absolutely no FD&C colorants are used.

Bromelain is an alpha hydroxy acid from pineapple and is very effective in gently removing dead skin cells on the surface of the skin by exfoliation. Enzymatic activity destroys the keratin of dead cells and removes the debris, allowing the skin to breathe, feel more alive and glow with vibrancy. A powerful digestive enzyme, Bromelain helps to rid the digestive system of toxins that ultimately create dull skin.

Capuacu Butter
Prized for its rich content of phytosterols to treat dry, damaged skin, these same polyphenols also combat free radicals. The fatty acids in Capuacu Butter protect and moisturize by creating a barrier that allows for true hydration for improved elasticity.

Curcumin (from Turmeric)
A superfood of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components, Curcumin helps heal acne, reduce redness, hyperpigmentation and fights lines and wrinkles.

Coenzyme Q10
CoQ10 levels decrease as you get older; in fact, most women over the age of 30 have below-optimum levels of CoQ10 in the skin. This lack of CoQ10 results in an impeded ability to produce collagen and elastin. Supplementing with CoQ10 aids the skin by acting as a strong antioxidant, helping to neutralize the harmful free radicals that contribute to aging; so when that age-related decline in CoQ10 happens, your skin becomes more prone to damage caused by free radicals.

Elderberry Fruit Extract
Elderberries provide a variety of flavonoids, including quercetin, rutoside, hesperidin and anthocyanins. These natural antioxidant superstars are responsible for assisting in the removal of free radicals. Elderberries are anti-bacterial (useful for acne treatment and prevention), antiviral (useful for cold sore treatment), anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory. Research suggests that flavonoids prevent and reduce wrinkles and inhibit the development and appearance of age spots. Of special note, quercetin is known for its ability to increase the production of collagen. Containing vitamins A, B6, E and C along with the additional polyphenols and carotenoids present, elderberry deeply protects our cells against damage and helps delay the aging process.

Evening Primrose
Evening Primrose’s high level of antioxidants, which counteract the detrimental effects of oxidation in living tissue, smooth roughness, reduce fine lines and lighten dark circles around the eyes. The antioxidant compound catechin’s (a flavonoid) presence in Evening Primrose, has the potential to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors and lower the risk of heart disease.

Ferulic Acid
Ferulic Acid is one of the most powerful antioxidants available. While other antioxidants provide a protective cover against free radicals, Ferulic Acid is an offensive antioxidant. It actively seeks and destroys some of the most powerful free radicals in nature. When combined with vitamins C and E, the reaction that occurs makes this powerful blend a highly potent wrinkle fighter.

Geranium

Tamanu Oil
Harvested from the seeds of the tamanu tree and found only in a handful of islands in the South Pacific, makes Tamanu Oil a rare prize. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties help reduce eczema, acne and other skin irritations. Sc Glucan found in this oil protects against UV-induced DNA damage and oxidative stress by providing a biological UV filter with a natural SPF. The process scientifically referred to as “cicatrisation” spurs new healthy tissue, and has clearly established why Tamanu Oil is a significant healing oil.

Volcanic Rock
Volcanic Rock is a mixture of naturally occurring amorphous silicates and aluminosilicates of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium. Working as an incredible purifier, our Volcanic Rock is from an ancient lava flow in the Sierra mountains that is of the highest purity. We use this rock from outside of Hawaii because we definitely don’t want to upset Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire by removing any element composed of “rock or sand” from the Hawaiian Islands.

Snow Mushroom (Tremella Fuciformis)
As far back as the imperial Tang dynasty, concubine Yang Guifei (713 to 756)—one of China’s famed four great beauties—is said to have credited the snow mushroom with maintaining her youthful appearance. Modern science can explain why: “It draws moisture to the skin, like hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, so finding an all-natural match for its hydrating power is pretty major. And snow mushroom has an extra edge. “The particles are even smaller than hyaluronic acid so it penetrates the skin more easily.

Squalane
Squalane oil is a saturated byproduct of squalene oil, a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon. The human body produces squalene naturally, which is why its derivative, squalane, is such an excellent moisturizer for the hair, skin and nails; our bodies know what to do with it.
Like other beautifying components naturally produced by the body, as we age, our body’s natural production of squalene begins to decline. Which is why science is now encouraging the use of squalane oil as a potent anti-aging moisturizer. Among its many benefits, it has been used to fight cancer, is an incredible antioxidant, detoxifies, hydrates and possesses emollient activities. Traditionally sourced from the livers of deep-sea sharks in the South Pacific, squalane oil has long been used in traditional medicine and is known as a “cure-all” across Asian cultures. It’s been used as a remedy for many different diseases, from constipation to cancer. Thankfully, squalane is now harvested froma many plant sources including olives and rice bran—providing an environmentally friendly and cruelty-free option.

Fermented Boosters
We all know that fermented foods like kimchi, kombucha, kefir and nato are great for our guts (aka: second brain) but who knew they could do amazing things in skincare? Ignited by Korean beauty, the trend has morphed into many uses of fermented materials. At O’o Hawaii, we use probiotic rich fermented ingredients such as sea silt, plant-based phytoplankton, fermented radish root and lactobacillus to help boost the effectiveness of our already effective natural actives such as ferulic acid (for resurfacing and sun spots) and sodium hyaluronate, which helps plump the skin and replace hyaluronic acid.
